Student Teacher/Practicum/Intern/Observation Guidelines and Procedures

District #117 currently accepts student teacher, practicum, intern placements, and observation requests for both the fall and spring semesters. Kelly Zoellner, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment handles the placement of students in our District. Candidates are placed according to the number of cooperating teachers who are willing to host candidates or cooperating teachers who volunteer to host candidates in requested content areas. Placements are limited. If a placement can be made, the Curriculum Department will contact the requesting institution directly. All requests should be received in the Curriculum Department by May 31st for Fall placement and October 30th for Spring placement. Institutions requesting the placement of a candidate will handle all the necessary paperwork for the candidate including billing the candidates for the criminal background check.

Prior to the first day of assignment at District #117, students are required to complete the following:

Student Teachers/Practicum/Interns

  • Criminal Background Check with Jacksonville School District # 117 (cost is $75 per student)
    • Upon completion of the Fingerprint Submission Consent & Notification Form, email the form to [email protected]. After the form is emailed, the candidate will be called or emailed to schedule an appointment for their fingerprinting. The criminal background results will be sent directly to District #117. District #117 completes the fingerprints in the Curriculum office.
    • If a candidate has a "hit" on their background check they will be notified and an appointment will be made to go over the findings.
    • If the "hit" is such that the District or state statute disqualifies the candidate from fulfilling their placements, the Superintendent's office will notify the sending institution.

    Observation Only Students

  • Students must complete the background check utilized by District #117 volunteers which is accessed from District #117 website.This is located under For Parents tab on the website – secure volunteer.Then select Student Teacher.The cost is $19.45.

Institutions should transmit a listing of all their accepted candidates that have been placed along with a copy of all the above-referenced completed forms to Curriculum Department, Attention: Caren Helmich, prior to the candidate entering District #117 classrooms. District #117 will transmit a final billing statement directly to the Institution for background check fees for all candidates. Institutions shall pay said statement upon receipt.
